Your car transmission is nothing complicated and it principally comprises of four major components – Bell Housing, Gears, Fluid and Filter. Bell Housing is a cone shaped metal case that is easily visible when you view the underneath your car. If you have a front-wheel-drive car it is located on the side of the engine under the hood. If your car is rear-wheel-drive, the transmission will be mounted behind the engine. Gears - Even though you may not be directly shifting the gears, an automatic transmission has gears. The gears are classified into main gears and planetary gears. Each gear has its own function and you will need all them to be able to run your car. Fluid - Transmission fluid is crucial for the performance of an automatic transmission. All of the smooth functioning is entirely due to the transmission fluid. Most cars come with red transmission fluid and it is your responsibility to periodically check for any leaks. Filter – Commonsense will tell you that fluid has to be perfectly clean for your car to shift gears with ease and at the right time. To keep the fluid immaculate, your transmission has a filter to trap any impurities. Transmission problems generally mean the car will not run or will not run smoothly. You will have to immediately check for faults in your transmission. It's imperative to check your transmission fluid at least once a quarter. A low fluid level can cause your car to shift with difficulty and it can also eventually lead to transmission damage. Please remember that transmission repairs can be quite expensive. If the fluid level is decreasing on a regular basis, you may have a fluid leak. The transmission, as stated earlier, is a closed system and hence there are only a few areas that can cause a leak. The places to be checked for a leak are - filler tube base, drain hole underneath the transmission, area between the transmission and the engine, selector shaft, speed sensor mounting point and the radiator. Your transmission filter can be a culprit most of the time. If you have not replaced your filter at the appropriate time, you can expect transmission repair problems. Most transmission problems can't be fixed by the do-it-yourself method if you know the basics of transmission. But the hitch is you will need too many specialized tools and pieces of equipment and buying them can be expensive and hence it does not make much sense doing things on your own. When your transmission has aged and gets overly weary, you will have to rebuild the transmission. The important thing is to thoroughly check any other possible causes for malfunctioning before you opt for the transmission rebuild, which is prohibitively costly. A transmission rebuild is a major mechanical overhaul done to a vehicle's transmission. Today's transmission is of course much more complicated than it was in the earlier model cars. There are hundreds of individual components inside the transmissions. In order to properly repair your vehicle's transmission, these components must be dismantled, cleaned and inspected for replacement. |
